-to further show support, players on the Portland Trail Blazers wore black socks with the Clippers
-the players union asked Kevin Johnson, a former NBA all star to take lead in the situation
-players demand that Sterling not attend any NBA games for the rest of the playoffs; a full account of past allegations of discrimination by Sterling and why the league never sanctioned him; the range of options that the league can penalize Sterling, including the maximum penalty, which players want if the audio recording is validated
-as well there will be no league wide protests or boycotts because there is already enough attention on the matter
Human Rights Violations:
Article 1. All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. This article is violated by Donald Sterling because he is discriminating against black people and, in doing so, is not acting in a spirit of brotherhood.
Article 23. Everyone has the right to work, to free choice of employment, to just and favourable conditions of work and to protection against unemployment. Sterling violated this by saying that he doesn’t like black people meaning that he doesn’t think they should have anything to do with basketball, whether its bringing them to games or playing the game.
Discussion Question:
Being that money is not an issue for a team owner like Donald Sterling, what would be an effective and fair punishment for the statements he made against black people?
