NGO Research Assignment:
The NGO I chose is called Anti-Slavery International. You can find it at:
http://www.antislavery.org/english/what_we_do/programme_and_advocacy_work/child_labour/default.aspx
The way this organization is connected to the human rights violations in my personal novel is not direct to the main characters. The connection to my novel exists due to the fact that the plot of this story revolves around a character named Gloria who "...has been investigating New Horizons' labor violations for almost two years." (Bunn 29) Gloria gets kidnapped becuase of her investigations and the plot unfolds from there. That being said, child slavery and labour still plays a roll in this novel and the organization Anti-Slavery International are doing things to help fight child labour. Some things that Anti-Slavery International are doing to fight child labour include campaigning to end forced child begging of talibé children in Senegal, West Africa; protecting child domestic workers from abuse and exploitation in six countries (Peru, Costa Rica, Philippines, India, Togo and Tanzania) through partnerships with local NGOs; monitoring the implementation of legislation in Gulf States prohibiting the trafficking and use of under 18 year-olds as camel jockeys, and the prosecution of those involved; increasing understanding and raising awareness of other issues, including children in the cocoa industry, child marriage and children in the armed forces and many more. These services are benefiting kids all around the world by bringing attention to the problem that is child labour as well as actively stepping in and helping to stop these ongoing problems.
